NoteGenerator for Mac is a local, on-device app. After a one-time model download, recording, transcription, and the AI-written note all run on your Apple-silicon Mac, and it works with Wi-Fi off. That is the whole comparison in one line: a cloud custodian holds your meeting, or your Mac does.

Where your conversation goes

Fireflies (cloud). Fireflies is cloud-based, with no on-device processing mode; audio, video, and transcripts live in its US cloud on AWS and GCP (Fireflies data-storage KB, 2026-07-20). By default, meetings are kept until you delete them — per Fireflies, "if the meeting owner has auto-delete turned OFF, meetings will not be deleted" — and automatic or custom retention (options from one week to one year) is an Enterprise-only feature (Fireflies — auto-delete KB, 2026-07-20). Account-associated personal data is deleted within 30 days of account closure (Fireflies Privacy Policy, last updated 2026-03-06).

NoteGenerator (on-device). The transcript and the note are stored only on your Mac, encrypted with AES-256, with the key held in the macOS Keychain. There is no second copy in a vendor cloud. "Nothing leaves your Mac" is true only after a one-time setup, and a few content-free connections remain — named plainly rather than hidden: the one-time model download; a license/activation check that sends a one-way device code and a persistent device identifier (treated as personal information, but never your name, email, or conversation content); update checks, on by default with an off switch; and any links you choose to open.

The bot: a visible participant vs. no bot

Fireflies' main capture method is a bot named "Fireflies.ai Notetaker" that joins Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams as a participant and, per Fireflies, "is always visible in the participant list to ensure compliance." NoteGenerator uses no bot at all. It records your Mac's own microphone and system audio, so nothing joins the call and there is nothing for a meeting host or company IT to admit, detect, or block. This is an architectural difference, not a claim that NoteGenerator is the only bot-free tool — Fireflies and other cloud tools offer bot-free capture too. What makes NoteGenerator different is where the work happens next: the transcription and the note are written on your device rather than sent to a server.

"No training" and "zero data retention": real, and worth reading closely

Give Fireflies its due here — these are genuine, documented commitments.

• No training. Fireflies' Privacy Policy states: "We do not use personal information for AI model training and we contractually prohibit our vendors from using this information for their own model training," and "We do not collect, use, or sell personal data for the purpose of training large language models" (Fireflies Privacy Policy, 2026-03-06).
• Zero data retention — scoped to vendors. Fireflies' "zero data retention" means meeting content is "not stored by any third-party vendor after processing," "not accessed by any third-party vendor once the service is completed," and "not used for training internal or external AI models" (Fireflies Privacy Policy, 2026-03-06). Read the scope as written: it governs Fireflies' third-party vendors. Fireflies itself still stores your transcript, summary, and recording in its own US cloud until you delete them (see retention, above).

None of this is a knock on Fireflies; it is a well-documented posture, and for a cloud service it is a strong one. The honest point is simply what these commitments describe: how a third party receives, processes, and holds your conversation. NoteGenerator answers the same question differently in kind — the note is written on your Mac, so there is no third-party vendor receiving the conversation to make a retention or training promise about.

Certifications describe a custodian; on-device removes the custodian

Fireflies carries a mature cloud-compliance stack, and it is real: SOC 2 Type II, GDPR alignment, and compliance with the EU-U.S. and Swiss-U.S. Data Privacy Frameworks and the UK Extension (Fireflies Security page, 2026-07-20). HIPAA — with a signed Business Associate Agreement — is available only on the Enterprise plan, and requires both a signed BAA and Private Storage enabled; it disables if Private Storage is removed, the plan is downgraded, or the BAA is unsigned (Fireflies — Set up HIPAA compliance, 2026-07-20). Fireflies encrypts data with 256-bit AES at rest and TLS 1.2 in transit (Fireflies Security page, 2026-07-20).

Here is the reframe, stated fairly: a SOC 2 report and a BAA are meaningful precisely because a third party holds your data — they are independent assurances about how that custodian receives and handles it. On-device changes the question rather than the answer. After a one-time setup, NoteGenerator keeps the transcript and note on your Mac, so there is no third-party custodian to audit in the first place.

NoteGenerator's own proof is different, and its limits are stated plainly: a one-tap Seal Test, where the app tries to open a network connection to itself and you watch it be blocked, plus a live connection counter that reads zero when sealed. That shows the app opened no network connection during your session on that machine. It is not proof the software can never connect under other conditions, and it is not a substitute for your own compliance diligence.

NoteGenerator is a buy-once Mac app: $49 introductory (list price $149) for a perpetual license, or $9.99/month. There is a free week that needs no card and no account — though you do give an email to download and to buy. Recordings never lock if a subscription lapses, by design.

When Fireflies is the better choice

Fireflies is genuinely the better fit for some workflows, and you should pick it when they describe you.

Choose Fireflies when your core job is capturing remote, multi-person video meetings across Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams — especially hands-free, with calendar auto-join — and you work across mixed operating systems. Fireflies is cross-platform: it runs on Windows, Mac, and mobile, with a Chrome extension and iOS/Android apps (Fireflies — How Fireflies joins and records your meetings, 2026-07-20). It is priced per seat for teams, and its AI assistant (AskFred) and other AI features run on credits (Fireflies Pricing page, 2026-07-20).

NoteGenerator has none of that: it is Apple-silicon Mac only, single-user, with no meeting bot and no calendar auto-join. If your privacy bar is "no bot in the meeting, a SOC 2 vendor, and no training on my data" rather than "the conversation must never leave my device," Fireflies' cloud model is a legitimate choice — and for Windows users or multi-person teams it fits where a Mac-only, single-device local app does not.

When NoteGenerator is the better fit — and how to check it yourself

NoteGenerator is the better fit for a narrower buyer: someone on an Apple-silicon Mac whose priority is that the conversation never leaves the device, who is recording an in-person or desktop-audio conversation rather than herding a team's remote calls, and who wants to verify that closed path themselves rather than take it on paper.

The gates are real and worth stating up front: NoteGenerator runs on Apple silicon (M1 or newer), Mac only; the AI-written note needs 16 GB of RAM (with less, you still get the transcript); and the local model needs several gigabytes of disk. The app is notarized and sandboxed, with recordings encrypted at rest.
